Building a Design Taxonomy

DESIGN is an ever-growing, all-encompassing field that accommodates a plethora of different disciplines. More and more we see new disciplines being shaped, named and supported in a feverish specialization route that influences many of us.

The distinction between some disciplines is not as obvious as it might seem, and in many cases is not clear where one starts and the other ends. Relatively new disciplines such as Experience Design and Interaction Design are still defining themselves and creating their own boundaries, and in the process delineating a conclusive spot within the overall Design sphere. Recent disciplines have also caused a twist in the traditional way we would look at the hierarchical organization of Design.

How would a contemporary hierarchical tree of Design look like? And is hierarchy even a good analogy to comprehensibly represent the ramifications of this field?

The Challenge

The proposed challenge is simply to visualize the contemporary Design landscape. The output can be as diverse as the projects featured in VC. It can be an interactive, static or even hand-drawn visualization. The basic criteria is that it should illustrate the levels of inter-dependency between all current design disciplines. The Wikipedia page on design is a good place to start, but certainly not the last. The quality of the visual representation will be as important as the personal interpretation of the contemporary design taxonomy.

Contribute

Anyone can be involved. Just send me an email to: lima [at] visualcomplexity [dot] com with an image or URL of your map and a short description of the thinking behind the execution.

All projects will be featured here and hopefully contribute to a rich debate on the extension of the different design disciplines.

Is there a deadline? I'm definitely on it.

I'm glad to hear that Fred. There's no particular deadline. Hopefully it will be a continuously expanding showcase of individual interpretations.

It still open ?

It's still open, even though no submission has been made. Perhaps if there was a prize people would be more inclined to participate. I will consider bringing a sponsor into the picture.

However, I still think this could be an interesting assignment for an Infovis class, where the best student projects would be featured here.

I like to cooperate and exchange knowledge on that subject, It's one of my major challanges in design of our software.

Alpha Percival is a common humanoid new Vestroia bakugan who uses his cape for invisibility and shoots plasma bullets from his head and his gauntlets. I like it because of its hair extensionsdesign. Its not a very complex bakugan. They come in great colors like black and red. We have a black and purple one with 720G. It is in great shape, opens and closes very tight. prom dressesIt has a working jaw similar to Abis Omega's, and a short tail. Its main attribute is Darkus, owned by Ace. wedding invitationIt is easy to close and opens, but it does not have a good chance of winning in battle if it has less than 600Gs. We got ours for free from a friend, but on eBay,prom hairstyles a good price would be around $2.50 with no cards included. In stores, it sells for about $6.50 with 2 cards.

Alpha Percival is the evolved version of Midnight Percival when he showed up in episode 27, hair extensionsdue to the attribute energy of the "six legendary soldiers of Vestroia". This made him even more powerful and later took on Mira and Gus. Percival won (not a surprise) and was able to help out Dan. Percival used totally new abilities. He is a powerful fighter, and is very fast.human hair extensions Plus, it has many good abilities. It is often confused as a 3-headed dragon, cheap hair extensionsbut the two secondary "dragon heads" are actually gauntlet designs; what look like his wings are in fact his cape.
