Project Description:
Stamen Design's work with San Francisco's Global Business Network (GBN) provides US government analysts with alternative lenses and metaphors for making sense of transnational issues and analyzing border-related material. Dominant political dialogue focuses on events that cross US borders. GBN asked Stamen Design to focus on flows along the borders, and to use data visualization as a way of rendering visible (and intelligible) these otherwise elusive movements.

These images track a variety of global flows in a circular interface, with countries and cities arranged around the circumference alphabetically. Immigration to the United States, container traffic from port city to port city, and container traffic from port to city are available for comparison across multiple years and directions. By adjusting the side-by-side interfaces and then overlaying them, a clearer understanding of the relationships between different data sets becomes possible.
