Project Description:
Various theories have arisen to explain how network structure affects diffusion across it. One prevailing idea is that it depends on the type, complex or simple, of the contagion in question. Complex contagions like memes and behaviors are generally held to be affected by social reinforcement and therefore don't tend to diffuse across communities. However, the authors show that memes can transmit "virally" across communities, and its future popularity can be predicted by understanding how many communities a meme permeates.
